The other day I had the TV and caught part of the opening ceremony for World Youth Day. I tuned in while a group of Indigenous performers (from somewhere in northern NSW apparently) presented a welcome event for the huge audience of young catholics to Sydney for this event. I stopped watching during Kevin Rudd's speech.
I like the idea of celebrating and acknowledging our (Australia's) Indigenous history for events like the Olympics, but for World Youth Day?
It wasn't that long ago that the church (including the Catholics of course) were attempting to commit genocide against the Indigenous population of Australia alongside the government of the day. Not that long ago means in the generation of the parents of most of us, if you're in the 15 to 30 year old bracket.
Do the event organisers even think about these things? Do the young people in these Indigenous performance groups actually know about this? Do they care?
Does anyone else see the irony?
Oh yeah, I'm back from that remote island... Also known as Tasmania.
