Here's an interesting article about how photos can be (mis)used to convey a certain message. I think the examples shown with recent events in the Caucasus are a little extreme, but the points made early in the article certainly have some merit.

What do you think?

Finally...

Soon after buying my first digital SLR (a Canon 350D in February 2005) I bought a 50mm f/1.8 lens. I thought the focal length with that lens was great - and I had a few close up filters to go with it which had been lying around my house and were probably older than me. At the time I took some nice (in my opinion) macro photos using this setup.

I can't remember why but I sold that lens after a year or two, and then bought a 50mm f/1.4 earlier this year. The filter size on this new lens is a bit different so my old close up filters were of no use, and step up rings seem a little hard to find these days...

Today I bought some new close up filters.

So to get to the point of this journal entry: I'll probably post some macro type photos again sometime in the future. :)

I hope everyone's having a reasonable winter (presuming you're in the southern hemisphere). I also hope you Uni students are looking forward to going back to Uni soon (if you haven't already). ;)

The other day I had the TV and caught part of the opening ceremony for World Youth Day. I tuned in while a group of Indigenous performers (from somewhere in northern NSW apparently) presented a welcome event for the huge audience of young catholics to Sydney for this event. I stopped watching during Kevin Rudd's speech.

I like the idea of celebrating and acknowledging our (Australia's) Indigenous history for events like the Olympics, but for World Youth Day?

It wasn't that long ago that the church (including the Catholics of course) were attempting to commit genocide against the Indigenous population of Australia alongside the government of the day. Not that long ago means in the generation of the parents of most of us, if you're in the 15 to 30 year old bracket.

Do the event organisers even think about these things? Do the young people in these Indigenous performance groups actually know about this? Do they care?

Does anyone else see the irony?

Oh yeah, I'm back from that remote island... Also known as Tasmania.

I'm off to Tassie for two weeks to shoot landscapes with alexwise and FB008 and another photographer who isn't on DA.

I'll be back in a few weeks if I survive the cold.

Bye!
